Requirements to Pray to God

Before you can pray to God effectively, there are some requirements.
Establish a Relationship with God
The first requirement (actually, a prerequisite) to prayer is to establish a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, God cannot hear you unless you come through Jesus Christ (Romans 3:23, Proverbs 15:8).
This is the first step to pray – you must be made right with God through Jesus Christ. For you to be made right with God, you have to believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood (Romans 3:25).
Have Some Knowledge of the Bible
God is Spirit (John 4:24) and you do not know what He looks like or what He wants. After establishing a relationship with God, the next step is to know who God is. This information is in the Bible.
The reason this is important to prayer is that knowing who God is helps you relate well with Him. The Bible tells you about your relationship with God. It also teaches you how much He loves you and wants to relate with you. This is an essential ingredient to prayer.
Pray in Faith, not Fear
I started the last section by saying that God is Spirit. This means that since you cannot see Him (at least not with you physical eyes), you have to pray to Him in faith.
Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith, it is impossible to please God. It adds that Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists. This is important. You cannot pray to God unless you believe that He exists. This is one of the things that the knowledge of the Bible does for you.
Finally, do not pray to God out of fear. Do it in faith!
5 Simple Steps to Pray to God

Once you have established a relationship with God, have some knowledge of God through the Bible, and establish, in faith that God exists, follow the steps below to pray to Him:
Talk to God Like a Father
This is really important. Prayer is misinterpreted in so many ways. Prayer is really a conversation between a child of God and God. This means having a normal conversation like you would with your biological father!
When Jesus’s disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, He (Jesus) started with Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy (Matthew 6:9). Starting your prayer with “My Father” establishes a close relationship situation.
So, if you have never prayer before, and do not know how to start, start with these words –
Worship God
Another important way to pray is to come to God in Worship. The second part of Jesus’s guide to pray says “may your name be kept holy” (Matthew 6:9).
Acknowledging that God’s name is Holy is a form of worship. So, the next thing to say to God during prayer is to say words of worship. Here is an example…
“May your Name be glorified”. You can also say things like “I declare you as God”. Or, “You alone are God”. You may also use words like “There is no other God beside you”. Most of the phrases I used in this examples are from the Bible (not word for word, anyway). This is why it is important to make a habit of studying the Bible.
Before I proceed to the next step in prayer, let me combine the first step with the second. Typically, you could say these words to God in prayer:
Pray for God’s Will to be Done
After you have worshiped God, the next step to pray to God is to ask for His will to be done. This is the next thing Jesus said in His guide to prayer – May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
If God’s will is established in your life, you can be sure that all will go well. Praying for God’s will may also imply asking for His guidance.
In line with the points in this section, you may add the following words to your prayer –
“Today, I asked that your will be done in my life, my family, my career and in everything that concerns me”. I can now add this to the prayer guide…
“Today, I asked that your will be done in my life, my family, my career and in everything that concerns me”
Pray for Provisions
In line with Jesu’s prayer guide, this is another important part of praying to God – pray to God for provisions. Jesus says in His prayer guide – Give us today the food we need (Matthew 6:11).
At this stage in your prayer, you can ask God to provide for you. You can ask Him to guide you as you go about looking for your daily bread.
In John 10:9, Jesus promises that you “will come and go freely and will find good pastures”. So, it is completely scriptural to ask God to guide you to find jobs, contracts, and every good thing in life – according to His will.
So, here is another set of words you can add to your prayer – “Lord, as I go out today, I ask that you guide me to your blessings. I pray for your favor and help”. I will now include these in the overall prayer guide…
“Today, I asked that your will be done in my life, my family, my career and in everything that concerns me”
“Lord, as I go out today, I ask that you guide me to your blessings. I pray for your favor and help”
Pray for Protection
God promised to protect us from evil, sickness and diseases. Anything He says in His Word (the Bible), you can ask Him to do.
Therefore, the next step to pray to God is to ask Him for protection from evil, sickness and diseases. Jesus included this in His prayer guideline – And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one (Matthew 6:13)
You can pray this part like this – “Lord, according to your Word, I pray for your protection against any evil, diseases or sickness”.
Finally, here is the full prayer guideline to follow as you pray to God – when you finish, add “Thank you for answering my prayer as I have prayed in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen”:
“Today, I asked that your will be done in my life, my family, my career and in everything that concerns me”
“Lord, as I go out today, I ask that you guide me to your blessings. I pray for your favor and help”
“Lord, according to your Word, I pray for your protection against any evil, diseases or sickness”
“Thank you for answering my prayer as I have prayed in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen”
